HELP STOP THE FLAWED IMMIGRATION BILL

Sheet Metal Workers' International Association

Dear Member:

As we all know, the immigration system in the United States is broken. S. 1348, otherwise known as the Immigration Reform Bill does not address the serious issues of employment verification and securing our borders.  This compromise bill only serves to compromise the wages and working conditions of hard working American workers.

The legislation includes an unworkable path to legalization for undocumented workers in the country. The worst component of this poorly thought out legislation is the implementation of a massive Guest Worker Program that will flood this country with cheap, easily exploitable guest workers who will serve as a cheap source of labor by unscrupulous employers.

We urge you to contact your Senators NOW!

Tell them the Guest Worker Program will turn good paying construction and manufacturing jobs into low wage jobs. Every two years new waves of guest workers will replace those who will supposedly be leaving, while Americans will be denied the chance at securing a stable middle class existence for their families.  You can contact your Senators and Congressmen toll free at 1-800-828-8498 or by visiting the SMWIA Action Center where you can send an online message to each member of your state's U.S. Senators.

In addition, you may also write letters to your local newspapers to spread your views about this vital issue. We have included a list of talking points to the right of the letter to assist you with your letter.

We cannot emphasize enough how important it is that we all act now is on this serious issue.
