Steven A. Nelson, Recording Secretary/Business Representative of the Gary Area, was born in Greenville, Michigan on July 23, 1958. He is married to Rebecca, and they have two children, Nicole and Steven.      Steve graduated from Merrillville High School in 1976 and served his apprenticeship from 1978 to 1982, at which time he became a Journeyman. He has served on many union committees including, Picnic, Organizing, Political Action and Stewards Committees. Steve has participated and helped organize D.A.D.s Day collections since its beginning. He has also served on the Credit Union Board of Directors for 12 years and was President/CEO for five years.       Steve was elected to the Local No. 20 Executive Board in 1992 and became an agent in 1994. He also serves as Trustee for the Gary Area Joint Apprenticeship Committee and the Local Pension Fund. He is active in the Northwest Indiana Building Trades and is an AFL-CIO wage setter for Porter County.       Steve serves as a commissioner on the Portage Redevelopment Commission, is a member of the Portage Urban Enterprise Zone Board and sits on the Portage Schools Building Committee. He is a lifetime member of "Pirates" which benefits Tradewinds and Spina-Bifida. As an active member of the Porter County Democrats, he was recognized as the 2000 recipient of the "Friend of Workers" Award.      Steve is a member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Portage and enjoys fishing, bow hunting and coaching basketball.
